NEW YORK FASHION WEEK 2020

Fashionistas, Influencers and Celebrities from all over the world, head to New York Fashion Week in February annually, to view the unveiling of Autumn/Winter collections.
The worlds media’s attention is on who is in attendance, what they are wearing and what will be the latest trends showcased by the industry's most celebrated designers.
This year New York Fashion Week's most significant trends for autumn/winter 2020 season are:
Colour, Elevated Tailoring, Capes, Leather & Faux Leather, Glamorous Evening, Cutout Silhouettes, Uptown Punk, The Veil, Volume Shapes, Oversized Belts and Victorian Frills.
Again, this year we saw more and more racial diversity and body sizes on the runway. Sustainability has been key focus on the runway with designers embracing the issue.
Designers showcased their collections using eco-friendly fabrics with models walking the runways with reusable water bottles. The message was strong and clear for brands to become more environmentally sustainable “Repurpose with Purpose”.

Colour blocking:

The runways showcased models dressed head to toe colour blocking. There was a big variation in colours on the runway. Fuchsia, green, red, blue and orange were strong contenders.
And the New York Fashion Week attendees’ didn’t disappoint, with colour clashing colours popping with every look.

Tone on Tone:

Models wore tone on tone coats, sweaters, trousers and shift dresses with matching shawls and head scarves.One colour ensembles were made interesting by mixing textures as seen in the runway with fringing, faux fur and leather. We saw a lot of layering of garments creating contrasting dimensions.
Neutral shades were the top pick, for our street style fashionistas… from head to toe outfits, creating the must have look of the season.

Elevated Tailoring:

Suiting is the classic trend that will never date and with each new season, designers change up the details giving us a fresh feel.
This season we saw cropped blazers paired with skirts, pants, and long shorts. We also saw sharply cut silhouettes with wide shoulder coats and exaggerated lapels.
From pops of colour, to neutral pallets and of course classic black… the tailored suit is a welcome to the season and not just for a corporate gal, but for every occasion.

Leather:

Leather was used from head to toe on the runways. The leather trench coat and blazer, is a staple for the season. In classic black, colour and neutral palette… she’s best worn tone on tone for that more modern feel.
Although we saw leather used in classic garments, we also saw leather, vinyl, cages and corsets, giving a strong bondage inspired vibe on the runway.

Glamorous Evening:

Voluminous structured glamorous evening gowns dominated the runway. There was definitely an emphasis on luxe evening wear…tuxedo inspired suits, satin dresses with crystals, one shoulders, satin, feathers and velvet.
Hollywood black tie dressing is making a comeback and we’re excited to see a variation to the classic black evening dress.. with evening suits, a must have for that special occasion.

Cut-out Silhouettes:

Showing skin on the runway was huge with cut-out silhouettes, adding interest to an otherwise simple garment. We saw designers adding intentional cut-outs to garments around the waist, on the shoulder, on the hips, slashes through crop tops and openings made at the sides of dresses.

Uptown Punk:

There was a major grunge rock influence seen on the runways. We saw plaid, fishnets, clunky boots, safety pins, tartan skirts and leather. A clear indication of a punk revival.

The veil:

Thin face veils were seen all over the runway. Veils are the new must have dramatic accessory for the season. Veils were beautifully embellished or simple soft tulle creating a sense of allure and mystery.

Volume Shapes:

Drama, drama, drama. This season everything goes, exaggerated and voluminous. Shoulders, sleeves and skirts. Designers created balloon like sculpturing, with soft curves and contours to their garments.
Eccentricity was the major theme on the runway. We will see this trend translated onto the high street with less volume and more wearability.

Oversized Belts:

Wide waist belts were definitely a thing on the runway in New York this season.
We love a wide belt, as it’s a great way to cinch in your waist.
New York Fashion Week designers have incorporated wide belts into their garments creating interesting looks for casual wear and evening wear.
We saw a lot of belts with coats this season. Most designers paired them with either modern or classic coats.A lot of different styles of belts appeared on the runway… from unconventional wide belts, scarf like belts, knitted belts and Japanese style wrapped waist belts.

Victorian Frills:

The runways showcased Victorian-inspired prints and silhouettes. Ruffled collars, luxe brocade fabrics, puff sleeves, and ribbon neck ties created a sense of romance to the runway collections.
